RPT, was THE best RPT.....

Oh Yeow............  if I am doing good work, and am making a living, and
actually doing better work than a lot of RPT"s why on earth do I care what
they think?     That sounds very cynical I know. I planned not to take
tests, but because I am loyal, and was taught by Guild people, I did it to
honor their gifts of knowledge.   A friend, second generation tech, will not
associate with the Guild because of some bad experiences years ago.  His
tunings are works of art. I know because I've tuned with him. He is over his
head in work, and since his dad was a CTE, he was raised to do things
"right".    Now why should he really care about what RPT's think, since it
was RPT's of dubious character who soured him on the PTG? Being an RPT has
not increased my confidence at all.  Plugging along, never assuming I knew
anything, I have worked only by word of mouth reference, with exception of
my web site.    I was actually called an SOB on this list several years ago
because I called into question the holy status of RPT and was NOT one of
them.  I let that go, for a few weeks, and then wrote the guy off-list and
said, "Oh by the way, I forgot to mention I passed all of the tests very
handily."  Suddenly he was backpeddling.  But I was NOT a better technician
because I took the tests.  RPT has helped me gain "preferred technician
status" with a store from which I am frequently recommended, but if an RPT
chooses not to like my work, it really doesn't impress me at all. I set my
own standards for excellence based on learning and experience, and how hard
I push myself.
 
My website gives a bit of my work history, so my reputation stands on my
work, not on my status.  When in graduate school it was ASSUMED if you were
admitted, attended the requisite classes, and were studious, you would pass
Comps.   I think the opposite is true in the Guild, and a would-be is
assumed to be stupid before he has gained the "proper status" by jumping
through hoops.  I personally think it stops a lot of people from every
consdiering the exams.  I think the cart is often placed before the horse
with this exam stuff ( have been arguing this for years, and know it will
affect nothing- I'm just bullheaded), and I think a lot of associates will
never upgrade because of the pressures which accompany the exams. JMO

One thing that seems to evade most Associates: The main reason for passing
the tests, is that RPTs will take you more seriously. Until then....? Of
course there are many Associates that do very credible work. However, most
RPTs have no way of knowing that, until the tests are passed. Just my
Opinion. Such is the reason there are so many Associates. They can still
make a good living w/o ever taking the tests. Shows a lack of pride IMO. I
hope the "Pirate" is reading.<G> Flack suit zipped tightly. (But, it won't
do you any good, as I'm off to Rawchesta and will be unsubscribing for the
duration.<G> Of course you could save yer "blast" for when I return.<G>)
