If you are not having trouble tuning the unison clean, I wouldn't worry
about it.  It is not something that will have any effect on the tone problem
you've been describing.

How about a string rubbing? (Note 26)

I was really just addressing Joe's statement:

"It is my understanding that it is the winding
that is the speaking length,so no difference."

Unfortunately the windings are NOT the same length,
as the image shows.  The bottom string AND winding
are longer.
