It is important for the damper pedal not to lift the dampers higher than the key-lift because once the pedal is disengaged, the lowering underlevers is felt as a thump on the depressed keys. Have you ever noticed a video of a performance when they view from the rear? If the dampers oscillated between pedal and play, it would seem uneven. In this case it would be better for the damper pedal to lift the underlevers to the height of key lift for the aesthetics of visual effect. However, having the pedal lift just shy of play as to engage the underlever in the escapement for touch weight resistance makes sense. Removing the damper lightens the touch but this returns a small amount of 'evenness' if only at the point of escapement. Come to think of it, I used to do this and liked the feel but got away from it to adhere to the even-lift agenda, unwittingly. Another hair has been split and defined. Thanks ED, -- Regards, Jon Page
