A lot of what you use depends on the sort of wood your are using. Oil based finishes have a strong tendency NOT to stick, or dry for that matter, on oily woods such as ebony or a lot of the rosewoods that are out there. My last handle with lacquer started rubbing off. Admittedly, I used the handle fairly soon after application, and perhaps chose the wrong product. I had some instant drying spray-lac on hand.
