Hi Julia,
                 A nice simple solution.  Mask off the surrounding 
hammers,  Spay the crown with a light coat of hair spray, should 
bring back the sparkle.  Easy to reverse, by lightly sanding, very controlled.

PS I use Aussie brand, it seems to have more solids in it.
