Once the varnish is removed (or almost), you can pour methylated spirit
on the board and set fire to it, that way it'll "evaporate" the old
varnish that still remains in the grain/cracks. No, I haven't done it
myself, but one of my colleages told me it can be done. Enyone tried it?"

YIKES! Are you outta yer everlovin' goard!???? Like I'm gonna try that one,.....NOT! Of course, if'n yer lookin' fer that real "antiquie look", have at it, be my guest. I would suggest making sure your home/shop insurance is paid up, however! Spruce burns FAST and HOT, so be prepared for a helluva weenie roast!
