Yet another billing question

MessageWell, here's another take. I'll bite on some of these if I have the time to mess with it. I find them fun and challenging. I'll generally quote an hourly fee and tell them that I won't charge more than a total of twice my normal tuning rate. I do the same thing with square grands. Usually the folks want me to tune it with that knowledge.

You have to be willing to accept the fact that you may not make your normal tuning rate. If you are okay with that, then go for it.

I'm not a piano tech at this point, but might be one someday (is that like I'm not a doctor but I play one on TV?). But I can relate as I have been in service businesses in the past (TV and appliances). The way I see it is that your time is worth so much per hour no matter what you are doing. I would charge the same.

I have a customer with a home studio and for whom I tune their Yamaha C2. They recently acquired an old Fender Rhodes, a Clavinet and an old Wurlitzer electric piano. All three are in working order but they need tuning. I have never tuned any of these but I have done the research and know what the procedure is, and I'm confident that I can pull this off. But I'm having trouble deciding how much to charge for the job(s). Less than 88 notes, no unisons, but I still have to open it up and adjust some sensitive mechanics, and it's still a job for a tuner. So today's question is: of those of you who tune electrics, what percentage of your full rate do you charge? Or do you just charge full rate anyway?

With experience I learn to be less naive. But I'm still glad this list is here.
