Mr. Dabble:
Tom, that's got me rollin'! LOL! That deserves to be in Reader's Digest.

Ok, here's my tale. I went to a local SBA seminar for newbie small business owners. It was an all day affair, for free. One of the suggestions was, of course, to name the business so it will be first in the Book. I wracked my brain for days, and came up with: "AccuTone Piano Service" (thanks to the Sanderson's Accutuner name). Yes, it got me up near the top. Not first, but almost. I can't say it's ever got my phone ringing off the hook. But I had a talk with the local rep, and asked if there was a way I could get a good rate on a larger ad. He said that if I had an ad in an unused category, I would get a big discount. He said there was a section "Pianos-Parts". So, since I sell benches, lamps, covers, etc., I put a large ad in that category that cost me about $50. Since I'm the only one in the category, it does stand out. I advertise everything I sell, as well as piano service, and this year included my website (thanks to Tremaine Parsons). Still, my phone isn't ringing off the hook. I do get calls for occasional piano parts (I just order them for people and drop-ship). Each year I have to make some small change to keep the cheap rate. It's up to $57. now, but I have two colors and it's real nice. I almost cancelled the whole thing, but it's so cheap compared to the regular rate that I just keep it going.
Lot's 'o fun.

The first year I was in business, I was a pretty clever guy. (Now I know better...) Since my last name starts with an 'S', I knew I'd be listed near the bottom, so I registered my business under the name, "A-4-dable Piano Tuning". Get it? "A-4"? As in A-4 the tuning note, A440? And at the same time, Affordable? Get it?

Yeah, well, nobody else got it, either. I kept getting calls for A For Dabble Piano Tuning, and the whole thing was just a mess. I still get a call now and then for A For Dabble, although it hasn't been listed in the book for a good 8 or 9 years.

I was first in the book, though.

Our book uses the alphabetical system. So unless I change my name to an "A" name, I'll remain in the same spot. Of course, if a tech stops runing his ad who is before me, then I graduate to his spot. Since I like my last name so much, I'll just stay put I guess.

Dave, congratulations on your advancement from number three to number one in the Yellow Pages listing.

Now, I'm wondering how the new number two is taking this change.
