Model railroad enthusiats use rubber erasers to clean their track of "whatever" to keep it shiny and produce a good electrical contact. Some track is brass, other is steel. So I'd bet a little rubbing would clean strings, as well. As to hammers ... if they've been around long enough to get icky looking, don't they need a little filing, anyway?
