Are bass strings "hexed" shaped all the way along their axis?

Greetings, 

        Are wire wound bass strings' cores (the core wire) flattened into a 
hex shape (I know there is a term for this: crimping or something) anyway, is 
the core wire hexed all its length, or just hexed at the ends where the winding 
terminates?
