Hi Ed,

A key is a beam. To make it less flexible the top and bottom could be
coated. I'd try water thin CA glue as it is more likely to penetrate.

It used to be possible to buy strapping tape that had thread embedded in
it. That might be a "quick and dirty" way to check if there will be
significant benefits from doing carbon fiber.
