WOW! Do you suppose Luther ever listened to Art Tatum? Great!

Dear List,
I certainly wouldn't want to be accused of using
Oscar's passing as a "marketing ploy", but am rather
"stunned" that, on the day that I shipped Luther G.
Williams' freshly-minted CD's ( which contain a
blurb by Oscar, endorsing his playing ) he passed
!!!!!!!
It seems, in fact, that " the torch" has been
passed, as well : through this rather shocking
confluence of events !
If you want to see ( and hear ) what I'm talking
about ; please go to the NPR website, and bring up the
story on Luther, which aired Nov. 6. Besides Oscar,
he's been praised by Ellis Marsalis, Paul Smith
( Ella's accompanist, ) etc.. Not bad, for a felloow
who's never had piano lessons, and doesn't read music
!!!!!!!
( And now fpr the funny story...... )
Luther, from his youth, made a point of
interviewing all the
" jazz greats" ( on cassette tape, if possible )
while they were still
"with us".
When he heard that Oscar was in town ( N. O. ) he
found out where the hotel was, donned his best suit,
put the tape recorder in an official-looking
briefcase, and went to the check-in desk.
     "I'm Mr. Peterson's cardiologist, and I'm here
with X-rays !"
he told the clerk.
So the clerk let him up, and he and Oscar 'hit it
off", immediately, and drove around town, all day,
sightseein. And then, when Oscar got home, he wrote a
letter to Luther, thanking him, and praising his
playing. ( I've seen it. )

Peace,
     Thump
