OT/old news/mice/ lavender

So, HOW in the world do mice get so smart about getting bait off the trap??
It certainly isn't from experience. Do they see their little friends get
deadimicated? But how do they know, even then, to ever-so-gently take the
bait off the trigger?? I don't remember this phenomenon happening 40-50
years ago.

Also on this topic (which of course is Off Topic) I tried those
sticky-bottom traps once. It was appalling to see a mouse that had begun to
literally crawl out of its skin before it got too exhausted to continue. It
was still squirming when I discovered it.
