Well I'll give you credit then, 'cause I know it didn't originate with me!
I'm the great imitator (no sense re-inventing the wheel, I always say).

I've been doing that for years! What a good idea (he said self-reflexively).

If you do not wish to mark the plate you can use golf tees while stringing
to keep you on track. Label a set of white tees from 12 to 22 including half
sizes. Then drop them in the appropriate holes where the scale changes.

I personally do not demarcate the wire gages because it detracts from the

appearance of the plate. Most techs carry a micrometer anyway, or should.

But a fluid writing pen will also allow you to free-hand numeric characters.

It's not just for the lettering.

The handle is a little narrow for my grasp so I split a length of player
tubing

and wrapped it around to beef it up.
