This is my proto-type model of which I have had one minor upgrade. 
I've used it for at least
ten years without incident. I share your fear and concern about blade 
proximity to fingers
but I assure you that this jig does not bring your digits within 2+ 
inches of the blade.

I am more concerned about nicking the shank than my fingers.

Don't knock it until you try it.
