There is no other way than to listen for beats.  I've tuned quite a bit with
open unisons, but you still listen for beats.  With Virgil's method, beats
are still heard, but you're listening for a certain sound quality that is
caused by the beat.

Right.  You learn the theory, then apply it.  Repeat until it becomes second
nature.  And then continue refining the craft the rest of your life.
