Dale, Yes, we're in big tree country here. Or at least we were. The logging companies have gobbled up most of it by now - hey we all need telephone directories, right??? Last week I saw a logging truck on the road loaded with one log, about eight feet in diameter, but that is a very rare sight. I haven't been to the Carmanah Giant, but I have been involved in groups trying to protect these kinds of areas. It is funny how for years, far-sighted conservationists battling it out with the logging companies are viewed as vermin by the powers that be. Then one day, the government wakes up, creates a protected area and lauds itself with its accomplishment, saying that these are wold treasures that need to be preserved.... Carmanah is 3 hours by road from Victoria, the last bit is fairly rough logging road, then there is a nice hike through the rain forest to the sitka grove. Let's go! Also, I live about 3/4 hr from Cathedral grove, a stand of 800 year old douglas firs, not shabby either, at eight feet across and 250 ft tall...
