mortise inserts slideshow

Clear DayFenton,
I have a sacrificial piece of wood clamped behind the area to be mortised (that picture is actually the key after being cut), this will eliminate a blow-out. I have used routers to do the same thing, but it can tend to burn the wood if the bit is not razor sharp, router is actually quicker for a few mortise replacements but for many, the dado is the way to go. There are many ways to do this, I suggest people do what works for them, what is within their capacity, skill wise or equipment wise. Mike

  Fenton,

If you look in the slideshow, the slide that shows removing the worn material from a natural clears that up. They've clamped a small sacrificial scrap of wood on the trailing edge of the key to prevent tear-out.

Question: I know I could use a router instead of a dado blade for stock removal, but I just can't help but think of nasty tearout in that key with the dado set up. I assume you don't have that problem, do you use it simply for fast removal reasons?
