These hammers look like moth damage, because they will burrow into the felt like wee termites and eat the insides first, but I'd also expect to find little tubular cocoons, small but fairly visible, hanging anywhere they do not get disrupted. Maybe there was a mouse and/or moth infestation that someone cleaned up but left the damaged parts due to lack of money? -- --Dave New Orleans
