Alan, There are crimp connectors in several sizes that you could use that would not require taping. Unplug the power cord, cut the cord and remove enough insulation so the connector can make good contact and do the same with your new cord. This would require that you have crimping pliers but they are easy to find at a good hardware store. As to your rivet problem, if the parts that are riveted are OK, the rivet can be drilled out and replaced with a pop-it rivet. These are available in various sizes and require an inexpensive tool to install.
