I do both, and sometimes a combination, depending on the piano.  Some do
better with a smooth motion -- some do better with an impact motion.

All I can say is try a stiff hammer for a couple weeks of regular use, and
then see what you think. :-)  As someone else mentioned, some come with a
30-day trial period.
