[pianotech] steinway hinges buzzing

Richard,
It most likely is the “piano hinge” rattling around. This was fairly common some years ago in the Japanese verticals (P22’s U1’s K3’s BL’s etc) with the long pin hinges as well as a few of the grand’s. The cause was from the hinge joints being ever so slightly larger than the pin and subsequently buzzing at various sympathetic frequencies during playing. Simple resolve was to pull out the long pin and put several “kinks”, or bends, along the length and then push the pin back into the hinge. The bend only needed to be slight enough to cause the pin to bind up inside the hinge rather than a straight through run. With your B check to see If it has a full length pin. If it does than I would suggest trying that resolve. If it is an older B with the sectional hinge sections then you might want to replace the sections with a continuous hinge rather than trying to guess which section was causing the buzz.
There is one other possibility that was found in a Yamaha where the inner core of the lid was causing a buzzing. The top veneer had come unglued enough to not show a bubble but caused a buzz. It took a very long time to triangulate the area of the buzz but it was resolved by drilling a few pilot holes around the buzz area and putting in some CA glue into the hollows of the lid. We then had to repair the poly.
Hope these suggestions help to provide a resolve.

List,

Steinway "B" 70's with loud buzing hinges when lid is on the short stick.

I've had this happen on Yamahas , and raising and then lowering the lid always cures it. Not so in this case.

Hinge pins are not loose, and all screws are tight.

Any suggestions?
