Matthew,

I would stay away from talc. I don't do a lot of restringing anymore, but
many years ago I was advised to use powdered rosin .

I just heard from a local tech that he puts talcum powder on his hands
whenever he replaces strings on pianos.  I believe I have heard of this
before, but was curious as to how common a practice it is.......
