It is very cool, indeed. Bill is one warm and beautiful person. He
always gave me a hug at Seattle chapter meetings and is always genuine.
What beautiful Golden Hammer awards he used to make! I have a
Steinwaybird, too! (although it needs a new eye!) I put it on our
Christmas tree every year!

Anyone remember the the foot and a half long elephant tusk that Bill Smith
reconstructed out of recycled ivory tails? He glued them together with
superglue gel and put a brass cap on the end. It was beautiful! For those
of you who don't know Bill, he used to make the Golden Hammer Award, and
also became well known for carving birds out of old piano hammers!

I took a picture of some he made for me:

An excellent use of old stuff.. ie. To entertain old guys.
   Phil probably appreciated it.

List,
The old chipped -- i.e. no good for piano work-- ivory that most of us
have gathering dust is used by craft and jewelry makers. For example I
had a guy ask for a few pieces for the inlay on an old pool table. Right
before the 05 convention in Rochester I sold a 30 year collection (maybe a
1000 pieces) of mostly tails and crappy heads for $300.00 on ebay. Turning
some old junk into a new Faulk or Fujan was my intent but instead I used
the money to entertain Phil Bondi .
