Al,

Don't waste your time with the M. Steinwart company - they are a dealership, owned by the third generation of a family (the Murphys) who bought the company from Morris Steinert when his only son decided to go into the electronics business. The only remnants of the Steinert name that I found at their store when I worked there for a couple years were some parts and decals for the stencil upright pianos they sold under the "Steinert" brand (made by Everett). And the rotted-away Steinert concert hall in the basemsnt. I doubt that there's anyone at either of their stores (Boston and Worcester) who knows anything about the old Steinert grands which were built at a factory in Leominster, MA until it closed sometime around 1932. I wonder if the factory records went to Yale University together with Morris' piano collection...

I would guess that David Betts at the North Bennet Street School might be a good source. Other area rebuilders who probably saw plenty of those Steinerts and might know something about them would be George Crawford and Chris Pleim - both have been at it for a long time at high volumes. Other possibilities would be Chris Brown, Gary Ford, David Nadworny, Rob Stuart-Vail, Larry Buck. Oh yes, getting away from rebuilders - Bruce Clark at Mason & Hamlin/Wessel Nickel & Gross probably knows quite a bit about Massachusetts-made pianos and is one of the nicest people I know. Then there's Larry Fine who researches that sort of stuff for his books... All the phone numbers are in the PTG Directory.
