[pianotech] DIY tuning

The videos not with standing, (How do these guys get all the glory, and even some of the fame?) there are some pianists who attempt to do some of their own tuning. The most they seem to be able to do is unisons and octaves. Very few actually know how to set a temperament.

When my dad (who? was a very good pianist), first started tuning, he also didn't know about temperament. As a result, it took him about 8 hours to get a piano in tune, mostly experimenting with intervals, until he liked what he heard. He was working for a piano factory at the time, so after that experiment, he went to the factory tuner, and asked for help. By his own admission, he never did learn to set a temperament. Shortly after he started tuning, he bought a Conn Strobotuner, and relied on that to tune pianos. I don't believe he could have passed the tuning exam. ?
