just a guess or two...

a. It looks like that area's paint was touched up at the factory (like
to cover up a crack?). The touch-up is very crude, doesn't match and
the piano has suffered from embarrassment-caused low self-esteem ever
since and finally "cracked" under that stress. ?

b. It may have been the manufacturer's first foray into full plates at
the turn of the last century and they just added the upper part of the
casting to the old 3/4 plate mold but didn't quite get the
cooling/annealing process quite right leaving internal stress at that
corner.
