[pianotech] Ringing On

I don't know if this has been discussed, but is it possible the room is
too lively?  Glenn Brown helped me with a similar problem at my church in
Phoenix.  Mason & Hamlin A would just keep ringing.  Our final test was
to plop a blanket down on all the strings at once and the ringing though
diminished was still there.

Our best evaluation was the the parabola shape of the hard walled room
kept the sound bouncing around.  No real final solution, but we did find
that by piano placement (aiming the key slip at a particular spot) we
were able to ameliorate the situation.  I also warn pianists to not try
to impress with fast playing as it all blends together.

    Subject: [pianotech] Ringing on
 
     
 
    I am working on an old Haines Bros. 5' grand with lots of issues,
including significant cracks in the soundboard, but I don't have a clue
why the sound is ringing on. I have regulated the dampers, which
apparently were replaced a few years back, but even when I put my hand
down on the strings I can't stop the sound. Any ideas?
