A couple drops of thin CA (or epoxy) on the thinned dowel should prevent any
such cracking.

I sympathize with the frustration about the lack of space between letoff
dowels. However, I am wondering if reducing the diameter of the dowel would
lead to cracking after a number of years of use. This is an occasional
problem on uprights, and it seems that thinning the dowel would only make
the problem more likely.
