[pianotech] Hammer Line Issue

Why not work out where this problem is coming from..

Press the damper pedal and if the hammers bobble, it isn't the damper
springs.

Play a few test notes with the damper pedal up and then depressed. If there
is a huge difference in resistance, then I would look at the dampers a
little more closely.

Chinese and Korean uprights of the 80's and 90's did have tight springs
(some brands) however I found that it was a resistance problem and not a
hammer problem.

I have not had any problem with the Kawai or Yamaha uprights...if they are
regulated correctly.

IMHO: high liklihood. I've serviced a number of Asian pianos that were 20
years old with this affliction. Bobbling hammers? I've seen hammers bobbling
so bad that I couldn't even tune the piano - piano owner never noticed. Some
aren't even bothered with bobbling hammers after you point it out to them!

Here's Matthew's first post:

>I went to tune a clients piano today. It is a Kawai Console, year 1986.

>The very first thing I noticed was the hammer line was totally screwed up.
Some of the hammers were resting on the rail, and others were off the >rail.
I unscrewed the action bracket nuts and pulled the action back a little
until all the hammers were resting on the rail. "

What is the likelihood that the piano had overly strong damper flanges,
un-noticed for 22 years ? The customer didn't complain of bobbling hammers.
That problem occurred after Matthew adjusted the capstans and let-off. We
are into the second or third stage of treatment without diagnosis.
