Try to get the model along with the serial number of the piano. Then call Schaff. They might have that scale on record. They will want to know the total number of bass strings, (not the number of notes in the bass, but the actual number of strings.). Then you need to give them the number of the string that is missing, counting from A0. As David mentioned, you you'll be better off getting both strings replaced.

Subject: [pianotech] question about a missing bass string

Hi everyone,
I have an Everett school piano serial #97104. The E in the second octave in the bichord section has a I believe a left string missing. I'm not sure if there is one in the bottom of the piano I can use to send in for match to be made or to splice. What other recourse do I have to replace this string? I realize a universal bass string is a possibility but I'm not exact on how to get the wrapping matched up and I beleive the core wire is different on these in its shape.

So what course of action can I take if I do not find a string in the piano somewhre? thanks everyone.
