The Q-tip alone does not do the work. The polishing agent and some pressure
(abrasive and heat--from the speed of the Foredom) accomplish the shaping
very nicely. Until you try it, you won't know how easy it is. :-)

Yes, I appreciated that. Those pictures were exactly what I was talking
about but it’s hard to imagine that a q-tip would actually perform any real
shaping—I was hoping to get it done in my lifetime. So I was mostly
interested in establishing the shape. In the meantime a tip came in from Del
which I think did answer my question and which I decided to pass on. The
polishing issue was really a secondary one as I’m not sure how important the “
polish” part of this particular procedure really is, especially since they’
re relatively invisible.

Since I sent pictures of half-agraffes, I guessed that was what you were
talking about! :-) Gentle pressure with the Q-tip works well enough to get a
shaped and polished surface. I've done it many times on these--Knabes and
the Chickering which was pictured.

A little off the original subject. These are half agraffes I'm talking
about for which a q-tip is relatively useless because they're open on one
side and you won't be able to give a "gentle shove" and have them stay in
contact with the string bearing surface. The recommendation I got from Del
was to us a small, fine rat tail file and bevel them carefully at a 45
degree angle on the speaking side. Clean them up with a brass brush and
don't worry too much about the non speaking side, FWIW.

Jude,

Like Paul, I find the Q-tip (when given a gentle shove) does well to take
the necessary shape when polishing. I think the photos give a pretty good
example.

I like the idea of polishing the agraffe holes with Q-tips (and Paul's
photos microscopic images certainly made a nice demonstration), but I have
not been able to find any Q-tips where the diameter of the shank allowed me
to get in deep enough. As a result I still continue to floss with a very
high grit abrasive cord. Q-tip suggestions?
