[pianotech] moving a large grand

Wow! Like the piano is bare on the floor? no blankets or anything? Find
out the mover's names to fix all the scratches! How did they get it up
against the wall? There's probably already scratches on it! Bad bad
mover...no doughnut!

As far as loading, I suppose if it's an in the building kind of move, you
could lift the tail (after getting some sort of padding on the corner
fulcrum (I love that word!) at the keyboard (front) end; lift the tail
enough and just lower it onto a dolly. Otherwise, then you'll need to
actually set it up on its legs, (actually only just the two for a quick up
and down) sans lyre, and then align a board and load it correctly, lift
tail, set it on a dolly, strap it up, and off you go. Is there room to
lift the tail of the piano without the keyboard end hitting something upon
lifting?

It sounds like some terrible scratching has already or will happen, so go
with prepared offense to get the previous movers to fix that problem.

I know this other discussion has come up, but never lower a piano with the
lyre still on! It's just not safe, and I've seen several lyres break from
the stress. OK you lyre's, my flame suit is on! Fire away for some 4th
of July fireworks! :>) I'm just not a fan of that.

Good luck to you.

Paul ( who moves pianos about 20-30 times per year for UNL...with muscle
for lifting!) Moving Services at a university is an awesome thing! All I
have to do is direct, remove lyre and legs, and then reverse the process!
I guess that's a perk :>) then my muscles don't hurt the next day!

[pianotech] moving a large grand

Hi all,

I need to move a large grand next week. I have the necessary equipment
(skid board, dollies, ratchet straps, packing quilts), but the problem is
the piano is in a store room, sitting on its side on a bare concrete
floor, with the bottom side up against a wall. Apparently a moving crew
left it like that, not knowing any better. At least they had the sense to
remove the lid first.

What is the best way to get it onto the skid board?

Thanks,
Paul Mulik
