Common sense shouts that fewer will break if not subjected to a 
strong overpull.

It also seemed counterintuitive that a quick jerk from using an 
impact tuning lever would break fewer strings than a slow pull, 
though the incantation "it breaks static friction" plus the 
realization that it's a lot less physical work convinced me to use an 
impact technique for pitch raises a lot of the time.

Scientifically impossible to prove one way or the other, IMO.
