[pianotech] Hammers or duplex?

Jim,

Its Ron O. here, but I'll bite. Firstly, I concur with Ron N's posts
on this topic over the past week.

Regarding duplex lengths and my preference, I approve of 25 mm, 30 is
still OK but I'd prefer 25, 35 is getting towards a noise risk, and
40 to 45 mm is guaranteed to create some screamers. The model A 185
grand from a certain maker is a fine example of how 45 mm duplexes
can scream in the first few notes of the capo section. As Ron N
mentioned, uprights are almost always quiet even when the V bar shape
is less than ideal and the hammers are worn and/or out of alignment.

When it comes to front duplex bars, there are few tools which are as
useful as an angle grinder when rebuilding the 'modern' piano.
