Hi William,
Thanks for the ideas on the hammer. I'll bring along what I have armed with a few soda straws just in case the other part is in the piano, and the other necessary tools of course.

As for repairs, I have an example of saving money for the customer. I had an action that required new elbows. I was told to put all new wood ones on. I asked an RPT in my area and he said the snap on ones would do fine. the piano is rarely used if ever and it's a winter spinet. I bet I'll get some flack for using the plastic snap on elbows but to take off each wippen upin it then repin it with a wood elbow would cost the cusomer much more and from what she told me along with her tone etc. she doesn't want to spend any more money than she has to. She gave me the willies for some reason. lol So the plastic ones are in and the action is going back hopefully Monday If the piano was used more often I might suggest to her to find a better piano only because of the nature of this piano, but she said that her kids only play it when they come to visit. I'll just be happy to get this over with.

On another occasion I told a customer that his piano required restringing before I would tune it because the strings were so rusty. The old broken one felt brittle stiff and rough from the gunk and rust. It was a Lyon & Healy grand. I suggested a different piano. I informed him that more strings would break. I replaced two the last tuner replaced one and there was another missing. Plus one broke while replacing another. Sometimes customers just need the hard facts put gently I guess. As Jack Webb said, "only the facts Mam."
