[pianotech] ringing dampers

Hi, Wim:
The brackets are fully seated on the studs, action stud nuts tight? I doubt the hammer flanges would cause any problems. Did you remove the dampers when replacing the flanges? Unless something got moved in the replacement process, I fail to see how things could have changed. Pluck the strings and see if there is a ringing. Come on, Wim, you don't need anybody to help, you know what to do. This sounds more like a puzzler. Of course she's going to blame the new flanges, it's only obvious (to her anyways). It's YOUR FAULT! Ok, no it isn't unless you overlooked something. You pressed the strings to see if the dampers move? Look and see if somehow the bass damper heads (which are two piece?) haven't gotten out of line. Take a flashlight and sight down the damper to see that the wedges are seated properly. The trapwork, lifter rod, and associated damper hardware is intact? You backed off the damper pedal adjustment so there's plenty of lost motion? Something doesn't add up.

Subject: [pianotech] ringing dampers

Piano: Yammy U2, 20 years old. On a sharp release, F#1 - A#1, F#2 - A#2, F#3 - A#3 dampen, but not completely, AND, there is a high pitched sound, probably a high overtone, but I don't know which pitch. All the parameters for dampers are correct.

I just replaced all the hammer flanges with new spring cords. The student likes the way the piano plays, but is now complaining about the additional noise from the piano. Perhaps she never noticed before, (I didn't when I tuned it four weeks ago), so she thinks it is related to the new flagnes.

HELP!!!

Wim
