[pianotech] Plate finish problems

Dale,

I've used polyester primer with much success in filling and feathering bad plates. That would be my choice. Some are better than others. Some have to  much porosity and don't give as smooth a final finish, but they should all work for you. 

Apply it at least twice the mil thickness of the finish that's on there, then sand away till it's level.
