I agree with you Susan, I have a few old Vose & Sons, along with some
M.Schulz, & others that were well built pianos in their day.
We forget that just like today there were "grades" of pianos built at that
time, many by the same maker.
A good example is Baldwin, I believe they made close to a dozen different
upright makes of varying degrees of quality. What you will rarely find are
the old Baldwin uprights with the Baldwin name on the fallboard & cast into
the plate, not the little house of Baldwin emblem the put inside all of
them. The old upright Baldwins were a quality piano with working sustenuto,
goood quality hammers & keys, heavy duty hardware, etc.
That's just a few examples of many.
