Hi, I had the same thing happen on a 1919 Chickering 1/4 grand. the heads looked just dark and black, but when i started cleaning, a beautiful mahogany finish started to appear. Many hours of scrubbing and polishing left a beautiful set of heads that matched the original finish. Go figgur. Dampers are from an 1880's Henry F. Miller. Very narrow heads, screw in/out wires. Fun...really (except for my back). Years of crud cleaned off with 4/0 steel wool, then the wood buffed. Pretty. Client is very picky about both appearance and performance. This piano is getting many things done that should have been when previously 'rebuilt' by another tech. I think my client will be happy.
