Hi, Arlie:
The Baldwin pedal box comes apart by removing the bottom and then the screws you found that hold the dowels. Remove the screws and then pull the pedal out which will include the dowels. You can then pull the dowels off of the pedal pins. You can drill out the bushings and replace the bushing cloth or just lubricate them with VJ lube if the cloth is still ok.. Put the pedals back in with the dowels and reinsert the screws in the same holes.

Having a bit of time, I revisited the Baldwin SF grand that had the squeaky pedal. Alas, the rubber bushing was not the culprit. The squeak is down in the box through which the pedals pass ...

Anyone know how those pedals are supposed to come apart without wrecking anything? What will I find inside? Perhaps the pin through the pedals extends into the dowels? Does the pin turn in felt, or in something else? The secretary at the church says the pedal has been squeaking a long time, but they usually play so loud that no one hears it.

Pull harder?

Haven't yet seen the pedal configuration in a Baldwin SF. Other pianos with dowels are like this:

Pin goes through the pedal. Pin goes into the two dowels. The two dowels come out when you pull on the pedal. And, yes, they are bushed with felt. The squeaking is most likely caused by worn felt (pin rubbing on glue or bare wood). Rebush both dowels, lube, and reassemble.
