Matthew, Kawai uses (or used) a rust inhibiting grease on strings to "tropicalize" their pianos. Thorough cleanup of the affected area and damper felt replacement will solve the visual issue. Be sure to check damper follow-through before saying that it will fix the aural issue. The dampers should follow the strings when you press on them. The damper pedal may be too close or the damper springs set too light on the strings. Need for wholesale adjustment is unusual but not impossible. I'd look the whole situation over a bit. Is there an issue with the damper-lever-bar mounting, is the pedal too close etc. before readjusting all of the dampers in the section. Good Luck, Andrew Anderson
