Hi Wim (and anyone else who wants to try the new system),

I wrote up just a few brief instructions to get you or anyone else started. I have no official capacity here or particular expertise, but maybe this will help.

1) Go to: http://my.ptg.org/PTG/PTG/Home/default.aspx

2) In the upper right corner, click on "Login to see members only content"

3) Enter your username and password (should be the same as you used on the PTG site), and click "login." If you have cookies enabled on your browser, and you want the new site to remember you (saving you the trouble of logging in every time you visit), click on the 'Remember me" checkbox before clicking on the "Login" button.

4) Click on the "Discussions" link on the left towards the top. This will show you all of the different groups (called "discussions") that you can read and/or join.

5) Pick one, like Pianotech or Harpsichord, and click on its name. A list of the ten most recent posts will come up. (If you are not interested in reading any of them, click the "Next" button under the list of subjects to see the ten next most recent subjects. Lather, rinse, repeat if necessary).

6) Click on the title of a subject (thread) you find interesting. The most recent post will come up, but, confusingly, below it will be listed the next most recent posts on any thread, not the whole thread. (Note: this step is really redundant; you can just scroll down the page to find the post you are interested in instead).

7) *Important!* To the left of the post you are interested in, click on "View Thread." This will finally get you to a thread view in chronological order. Now you can read the thread. (When you are done with it, you can click your browser's "Back" button to see other subjects.)

8) If you want to post to this thread, click "Reply to Discussion" to the left of whatever message you might want to quote from.

9) A new screen will come up the first time only, asking you if you want to subscribe to (join) this discussion (group), and giving you the option of receiving email from it whenever someone posts to it. You can decide if you want to receive email, and to which email address you want that email to be sent, and then click "Save." You have now joined this discussion (group); you are a member now and won't have to do this again for this group.

10) You will be returned to the thread. Click again on "Reply to Discussion" to the left of the post you might want to quote. An edit window will come up, allowing you to edit the quoted material and add your reply. You can click the "Attach" button to attach a photo or other file, but that's beyond the scope of what I will write up tonight. When you have composed your message (and hopefully edited down the quoted material), click on "Send" near the bottom right. That's it; you have now posted a message.

Hope that helps. While I do believe that it is needlessly complicated, it's not really all that time consuming, and many of the steps listed only have to be done the first time. If you enabled cookie saving in your web browser, you will only need to do steps 1 and 4 to get started, 5, (6,) and 7 to start reading whatever you want to read, and 8 and 10 to post. Step 7 is the key to sanity - it is what will allow you to see the whole thread uninterrupted.

I encourage folks who haven't done so to give it a try; you may or may not like it, but at least you'll understand what this rather animated discussion is all about.
