No, I haven't tried these things yet. A few months ago the owner spent $400 on reconditioning, and thought that was an awful lot, so it would be very difficult to get her to spend even more now. I get the impression from her that she thinks I didn't do something in that reconditioning job to get rid of the clunking. But I was trying to take care of first things first -- cleaning, screw tightening, hammer filing, lost motion, let-off, softening the bangy tone, etc. Thanks, everyone, for the replies. She probably won't pay for anything until the next tuning -- probably a year from now since it holds pitch really well. But I'm keeping all your suggestions with her customer card. Yes, I still use cards -- everything in one place, directions on the back, no computer or PDA to drag around . . . . P.S. Why would wrap-around sticker cloth be quieter? There are plenty of old uprights with just the square of cloth on the bottom of the stickers that don't clunk on key return. --David Nereson ----- Original Message ----- From: <tnrwim at aol.com> To: <pianotech at ptg.org> Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2011 6:41 PM Subject: Re: [pianotech] clunking upright stickers David Have you tried replacing the hammer rest rail fetl? Also, make sure the rest rail brackets are are tight in the rest rail, and that the brackets are tight in the action brackets. And last, make sure all four or five action brackets are solid and tight on each of the bracket posts, and that none of them are loose in the keybed. Wim
