Hi, Ray:
Don't worry about the finish. Chemicals can't damage it alone. If the cloth had grit in it, you might get some scratches, and if it wasn't cotton cloth you might get fine scratches, but your problem is not the 409. Now, if it is a wood color and it has a non-high gloss finish, it could be coated with laquer on top. Then in that case (no pun intended) the laquer could have been affected in some way. If it was the high gloss finish, you can use any kind of cleaner or polish that is approved for plastics. I get most of my products from a local plastics supply. Cory Products has a high gloss cleaner. You can find Gel Gloss in most grocery stores, or Meguiar's Mirror Glaze products in auto parts or boating stores. Some products are like a cream consistency, and these are good for polishing plastic. Others are very watery, and they are meant for cleaning smudges and fingerprints. In all cases, use only cotton cloth, like a flannel. Synthetic fibers can make fine scratches, as can paper towels made from wood fibers.
    I hope that helps.

Subject: [pianotech] Yamaha polyester finish.

Hello guys,
I have a customer who recently bought a Yamaha C3 grand with polyester finish. The instrument is about three years old. The problem is, the piano had a few smudges on the case and the guy sprayed it down with 409 cleaner and wiped it down with terry cloth. Well, his C3 now has a flat black finish. He calls me after the damage is done. I am a 42 year second generation tuner/tech veteran. I was an RPT for several years. I founded the Palmetto Chapter in South Carolina with the help of Marshall Hawkins who was Southeast Regional vice president at that time. Anyway, do any of you have any ideas on restoring the gloss to the finish of this piano? I'd really appreciate anything you can come up with.
                                                                                                                                                                                                                Many thanks,
                                                                                                                                                                                                                 Ray Dellinger
