[pianotech] What is bloom,

Oh and let me add (just to get started) a system that has just the right impedance characteristics to provide a balance between power and sustain.

Bloom, then, is that characteristic that some soundboard systems have in which the smallest amount of energy input gets the system moving while at the same time the system won’t give up its energy too quickly. The why (as JD asked) has to do with the physical characteristics of the soundboard (and scale) that allow that make that happen. Not an adequate or complete description, I realize, but until one defines what bloom is it will be difficult to describe what causes it, or better, allows it.

Feel free to correct, modify or add.

OK then let me start this by offering one criteria that might impact this particular quality. Optimizing the stored potential energy in the soundboard/string system.

Not having ever been able to measure this…I don’t.
