David Good descriptive of Bloom. And no matter it can't be quantified, we all pluck strings and listen to this phenomena. IMO it is the bloom that gives a piano its distinctive voice. I looked a t 6 ft Sojin yesterday 15 years. Fantastic singing voice with excellent bloom. I've heard few any better. The weak spot in these pianos is always the hammers and bass strigns. Had a nice tight grain Sitka board. Heavy sand cast plate. No compression ridges. I don't know how they make there boards but ...its working. Great impedance balance! Who woulda thought? Dale S. Bloom, then, is that characteristic that some soundboard systems have in which the smallest amount of energy input gets the system moving while at the same time the system won’t give up its energy too quickly. The why (as JD asked) has to do with the physical characteristics of the soundboard (and scale) that allow that make that happen. Not an adequate or complete description, I realize, but until one defines what bloom is it will be difficult to describe what causes it, or better, allows it. Feel free to correct, modify or add. Optimizing the stored potential energy in the soundboard/string system.
