The routing sounds scary to me. I'd get that area really wet ( if key buttons are there, tack them in place with a staple gun with a brad nailer tip, first) and then try to squeeze in whatever Spurlock mortise sizing caul is needed to give you clearance for some bushing cloth. If some buttons split, they are easily glueable. And if that doesn't work, I'd try using a bushing ironing tip in a soldering iron to try to enlarge the holes.
