Wim< The trouble with a rigid "depth gauge" such as a hammer shank is that each time you tap the pin down until the shank makes contact with the plate, it will be pushed up a bit, until there is a discernible difference. I've used the same method as Bill Monroe for years, a sliver of rubber wedge that I tape (with electrical tape) to the side of the punch. Works great.
