The height is determined by the height of the tip of the tail of the hammer at let-off. The tip of the tail should be roughly even with the top of the backcheck at the point of let-off. Some prefer it 1-2 mm higher. I won't split hairs. I have long done something very similar to what David does. It does not take long, and it is not hard to do at all. There is another added advantage in that you can change the height of the back check to customize it to the hammers.
